School Tours


Center Grove Orchard is honored to help educate children about agriculture. With four different tours and acres of informative activities on a working farm, we’re like a giant exploration laboratory. And, at CGO, you never have to worry about not having an apple for the teacher.

Apple Tour

Dates: September 11 – October 10, 2017
(no tours on Monday, October 9)

Ages: Kindergarten through First Grade

Learn about Iowa agriculture, crops and orchards. Some learning points will be: new vocabulary, using the five senses, observing weather conditions and discussing the production of the apple crop.

The Apple Tour includes:

  • Watching apples being sorted and bagged in the apple grader room
  • Visiting the farm animals
  • Exploring our school house
  • Learning about the life cycle of an apple tree, caring for the apple trees and the tools used on the trees
  • Discussing why bees are important to our Orchard
  • Hayride to the Orchard (picking apples depending on availability)
  • Visiting the Country Store

For those groups who wish to stay longer with an “Apple Tour & Play” option, they may explore the following on their own: Super Slides, Jumping Pillow, Corn Pool, Hay Maze, Corn Maze, Spiderweb, Duck Races, Rope-a-Cow, Pedal Tractors, Storybook Land, Jumping Horses and the CGO Express train. There are several eating options available to make your day refreshing.

Daycare + Preschool Tour

Dates: September 11 – November 3, 2017
(no tours on Monday, October 9)

Ages: 3 to 5 years old

For daycare and preschool groups, our tour focuses on physical activity and experiences for active little bodies. The children will enjoy playing during their Daycare + Preschool Tour and will explore the following areas on the farm:

  • Jumping Pillow
  • Three Little Pigs houses
  • Apple Tasting (picking apples depends on availability)
  • Farm Animals
  • Hayride

Pumpkin Tour

Dates: October 2 – November 3, 2017
(no tours on Monday, October 9)

Ages: Any

Explore the Pumpkin Patch on a fun and educational tour!

The Pumpkin Tour includes the following:

  • Hayride to the Pumpkin Patch to learn about the pollination process and growth of the pumpkin plant before a pie-sized pumpkin is picked to take home
  • Playing in the Corn Pool
  • Exploring our School House to learn the life cycle of a pumpkin plant, how to care for the plants and the tools used on the plants

For those groups who wish to stay longer with a “Tour & Play” option, they may explore the following on their own: Super Slides, Jumping Pillow, Corn Pool, Hay Maze, Corn Maze, Spiderweb, Duck Races, Rope-a-Cow, Pedal Tractors, Storybook Land, Jumping Horses and the CGO Express train. Home School Day

Dates: Thursday, September 21, 2017
Tuesday, October 17, 2017

Ages: Any

Home School Days are self-guided tour days! You are invited to attend the four Tour Talk sessions around the Farmyard where tour guides will present information about apple production (on September 21) or pumpkin production (on October 17), farm produce and pollination, plus a hayride! The school bell will ring five minutes before each session starts.

Tour Talk times: 9:30 AM, 10:00 AM, 10:30 AM, 11:00 AM, 11:30 AM, 12:00 PM, 12:30 PM, 1:00 PM and 1:30 PM.

You will receive a card upon entrance to the Farmyard. Please take this card and have the tour guide stamp it upon the conclusion of the Tour Talk.

Classroom teacher is FREE.

Parents or chaperones holding a Season Pass Plus will receive a $3 discount off their admission.

DAYCARE + PRESCHOOL

HOME SCHOOL DAY

$7.95 per person, ages 3 and older. Admission must be purchased to participate in the four Tour Talk sessions around the Farmyard. CGO Express ticket may be purchased on the day of the tour.

Season Pass, Season Pass Plus and other discounts do not apply to Home School Day.

General Tour Information

  • School tours are for certified daycares/pre-schools and public/private schools. Home school families are invited to participate in our Home School Days.
  • Tours are available weekdays at 9:30 AM, 11:15 AM and 1:00 PM and last about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
  • Tours are held rain or shine. Rainy day tours are just as fun when we enjoy indoor learning and play activities.
  • There is a 15-person minimum for tours. If you have a group smaller than 15, you are welcome to come for a tour at the 15-person price. Groups larger than 20 will be divided into multiple groups.
  • Tour groups should arrive 10 minutes before the tour begins to get checked in at the Admission Bins and settle payment.
  • Picnic tables are available if you wish to bring sack lunches.
  • For school tours we prefer one form of payment. We accept cash, business checks, MasterCard, Visa and Discover. We also accept purchase orders for tour groups. We do not accept personal checks.
  • Adult Season Pass Plus holders receive a discount on their parent/chaperone admission rate. Other discounts do not apply.
  • Please have bus drivers follow the route noted on our bus map. Drivers are asked to use the third entrance, located on the north edge of the parking lot, following the drive to the west. Then turn south toward the Country Store. The entrance is on the west half of the Country Store and well–marked. Please then loop back around and park the bus in the west parking areas.
